What is Beard Oil, and Why Should You Use It?
Beard oil is a lightweight scented oil that is easily absorbed, so it doesn’t leave your beard feeling greasy. It helps prevent rough, coarse and spiky facial hair (because seriously, who wants to kiss that?). Facial hair tends to be thicker and coarser than head hair, which means you have to take a bit of extra care to ensure that it’s not only good-looking but great-feeling. Coarse, itchy beards are a pain and you might be tempted to shave it all off – but you don’t have to if you start using beard oil. Beard oils soften facial hair and conditions the skin. No more wild unkempt beard, and no more itch!
How to Use Beard Oil
Beard oil can be applied to your beard as soon as you start showing stubble. However, it may be a bit too greasy to use until your beard has gotten thick enough to thoroughly cover your skin. This could be a half-inch or longer; depending on how fast your facial hair grows, you could start using beard oil within a week.
Some beard oils are easily absorbed and come out easily in the shower, which makes them great for everyday use. Some are intended to remain in the beard if you don’t want to wash your beard every day.
We recommend using a beard shampoo (more suited to thick, coarse facial hair than regular shampoo). Depending on the thickness of your beard, towel dry or blow dry it; work a small amount of beard oil (as directed on the bottle) through the beard using your fingers or a beard comb (we recommend fingers, just so you feel whether you’re getting all of the beard or just parts); finally, smooth down your beard, and you’re done!
We’ve had people ask if they can just use coconut oil instead. You certainly can! This multi-purpose oil is used for cooking, skin care, hair care, and even teeth whitening. Use coconut oil sparingly. Melt a small amount (when melted, about the size of a pea) in the palm of your hands before working it through your beard. However, you’re going to smell like a tropical drink or coconut sunscreen… so if it’s a smell you don’t like, use a specially formulated and scented beard oil.
