As an appetite suppressant, garcinia cambogia uses an extract called hydroxy citric acid or HCA (covered in more detail here on shape.com) to suppress your appetite to eat more food by increasing serotonin levels. This is used due to depression and anxiety (caused by lower serotonin levels) being linked to common causes for eating more than usual. Subsequently, the use of garcinia cambogia, in theory, should lessen your desire to indulge in more food if you are indeed eating more because of depression or anxiety.
There is also a second mechanism in which HCA performs to stop fat growth. HCA is known to inhibit an enzyme called citrate lyase, which is responsible for converting carbohydrates into fat. Lastly, it is also involved in the reduction of LDL or “bad cholesterol”.
According to research, there is currently no “absolute” or definitive evidence that supports the consensus that garcinia cambogia will indeed help you lose weight or control your cholesterol.
In a study conducted with women who were overweight, several were given garcinia cambogia while the others were given a placebo for a period of 60 days. The triglyceride (a type of fat known for raising the risk of heart disease) levels of those who received the garcinia cambogia reduced by one third. The participants HDL (“good cholesterol”), LDL (“bad cholesterol”), total cholesterol and overall body weight did not change.
In another study, overweight individuals were given either garcinia cambogia extract, soy leaf extract, or a placebo. After 10 weeks, no participants had shown a decrease in weight or cholesterol levels.

- Alex M., who gave the product 5 out of 5 stars states that he was skeptical at the beginning being diagnosed with type-2 diabetes. He also mentions how he has tried multiple prescriptions to get rid of the negative effects as well as losing weight. He states that after 24 hours of using garcinia cambogia, he had noticed that his hunger had started to reduce quite significantly. After looking at his entire review, I am not so certain whether it is legitimate. It seems strange that someone would write a review at the length in which he did and what is stated in the review is contradictory to what the results from the clinical studies mentioned above yield. Though, if this is indeed a legitimate experience, it should be taken with some weight as the results seem to be quite significant.
- Tori Fabiano, who gave the product 4 stars states that the product did indeed work well for him, increasing his mood and overall energy levels much like a testosterone supplement.
- Another customer gave the product 3 stars and stated that if garcinia cambogia is taken on an empty stomach, the appetite is noticeably reduced, but not entirely eliminated.
