Can Testosterone Help You Lose Weight?
If you are not familiar with the term, hypogonadism is the medical term for a deficiency in testosterone. The new study by the Endocrine Society (you can view the full report in the link above) was recently presented at their annual meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana, and comes out with some pretty significant findings as to how testosterone can boost weight loss.
According to the lead study author, Karim Haider, M.D. of Bremerhaven, Germany, test subjects were part of a 10-year (and ongoing) study to measure the impact that long-term testosterone therapy had on progressive and sustained weight loss. As stated by Dr. Haider, “Men with hypogonadism and obesity receiving long-term testosterone therapy achieved progressive and sustained weight loss, while untreated controls gained.
The favorable decreases in weight and waist circumference may have contributed to the observed reductions in mortality and major cardiovascular events.”
Not only was weight loss recorded with the introduction of testosterone (which cannot be said about the control group), but it also led to a lowering of risk factors of premature aging and mortality. The study followed 805 patients who were, on average, in their late 50s to early 60s and had low levels of testosterone. Of the 805 patients, 462 of them were defined as obese and were given the choice to receive testosterone (of which 273 did) or not.
After 10 years of observation, it was found that the men who were treated with testosterone saw a more than 20% drop in their baseline weight, a nearly 5-inch drop in their waist size, and an improvement in their BMI (body mass index) and waist-to-height ratio. The men who were not treated with testosterone average a gain of nearly 4% of their body weight, a nearly 2-inch increase in their waist size, and negative effects on their BMI and waist-to-height ratio.
Simply put by Dr. Haider, “Our study found long-term testosterone therapy in men with hypogonadism and obesity resulted in significant improvement in measures of body size and composition. In addition, testosterone therapy was associated with a reduced risk of death, heart attack, and stroke. This suggests testosterone levels should be measured in men with obesity, and testosterone therapy should be offered if indicated.”
