I was browsing around the news the other day when I came across an article that interested me and had some relevance to what we talk about here on this site.
The article I saw was on WebMD and it was talking about the Mediterranean Diet. We discuss this diet, and all of its health benefits here (dietpillreviews.com/weight-loss-meal-plans/the-mediterranean-diet), but apparently there are even more benefits that have come to light lately that were unknown at the time we wrote that page.
What Was Learned About the Mediterranean Diet?
What was uncovered by a study that is discussed in that article is that switching to this type of diet can help cut the risk of stroke in women. Add that on top of the already known benefits that include the reduction of the chances of getting heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and certain types of cancer, there is much evidence that this is a great choice when you’re looking to eat more nutritious meals.
Unclear from the data in the study is why it primarily reduced the stroke risk for women, and not for men. Further testing will need to be done to make a determination on this. In the study, the risk for women was decreased by 22%, while for men it was only 6%. The 6% was deemed so small as to be a possible “chance” finding and not conclusive evidence.
Foods That Fit the Mediterranean Diet
Conjecture about why the evidence indicated this health benefit is that the foods consumed in this diet are much healthier for you than foods you typically see in a traditional Western diet. While a Western diet has many fatty and inflammatory foods like burgers and hot dogs, steak, butter, lots of fried food and fast food, the Mediterranean Diet is much cleaner eating. This diet consists of anti-inflammatory and high fiber foods like fish, vegetables, fruit, nuts, and beans while avoiding many dairy products and meats.
Another Reason to Watch What You Eat
Given this new study, there has never been a better time to examine what you’re eating and ask yourself if you are giving your body what it needs. This is yet another reason to cut out the junk food and change over to a more healthful diet such as this.
