I’m always on the lookout for new diets, seeing what’s trending in the news, what seems to be working, and what I can implement into my meal plan. This one I just heard of today while browsing the news, the Optavia Diet, kind of reminds me of a post I wrote recently about the Comfort Food Diet.
In that post, I talked about how weight can be lost while still enjoying some of your favorite comfort foods. In the new Optavia Diet, you can still enjoy some of your favorite snacks – like cake and brownies! – while staying on track for losing a few pounds. Want to hear more? Continue reading below.

How Does the Optavia Diet Work?
I mention cake because the star of the TV show Cake Boss, Buddy Valastro, is a huge fan of the Optavia Diet and has said to have lost 35 pounds while following its plan. His outspokenness about this diet, along with other celebrities, helped make it one of the top trending diets on Google in 2018. But what is it all about?
If you’re at all familiar with the Medifast Diet, then you will probably recognize many components of Optavia, as the latter is simply a modified version of the former. Under this diet plan, Optavia ships you low-calorie meals that are prepackaged (which they refer to as “fuelings”) as well as ready-to-eat snacks to help you get through the day.
There is a lot of variety to choose from, with over 60 different portion-controlled options for “fueling”. This includes bars, shakes, shelf-stable meals that are pre-made (such as mac n’ cheese), as well as decadents like brownies and cake.
All of the food items, according to Optavia, are protein-based and contain a probiotic for better digestive health.
While most of your diet consists of these “fuelings” that you get shipped to you, you round out the rest of your diet with “lean and green” meals full of vegetables and lean protein (chicken and broccoli, for instance) which you prepare at home.
Optavia Program Options
There are a few different plans you can choose from in the Optavia Diet:
Along with the shipments of food, you also get access to a coach who can help you with your weight loss journey. Program enrollment also includes access to their member forums, video chats, and support meetings (weekly) where you can converse with other members to share tips and encouragement.
How Much Does the Optavia Program Cost?
Overhauling your diet and having as many as 5 meals daily shipped to you will obviously cost you a bit of money. It is not a cheap diet, regardless of which plan you choose above, but they range from around $350 to $450 per month. That’s not accounting for the food items you’ll need to prepare your “lean and green” meals on your own as well.
Does It Work?
I’m pretty skeptical about any diet program where they ship the meals to you. I would rather enroll in something (or buy a book) that provides recipes and meal plans where I can grocery shop and prepare the food on my own, knowing that I am making healthy choices. Plus, I don’t think a reliance on shakes and bars is very healthy for your eating habits. In any case, if you want to read more about this company, you can visit them at optavia.com.
The best route is to make healthy choices in the kitchen, implement a regular exercise routine, and if you want a little extra boost you can add a diet pill like PhenQ into your supplement routine. It will take self-discipline and commitment, but it is worth the effort! A diet like Optavia may help you lose weight initially, but I can see growing tired of their meals, shakes, and bars, plus the cost being prohibitive after a while. For long-term results, follow the three tips described above.
