But what leads to a lower level of testosterone in the first place? Why is this hormonal issue so common in men, especially as they age? We set out to answer that below.
What Causes Drops in Testosterone Levels?
When men do not have sufficient testosterone, it is a sign of bad health. But what is the reason for this drop? There are a number of factors that play into this, described below. These are all in addition to the prime cause that most know about: age. As men age, testosterone production slows down considerably.
This was one of the first things that came up in my research, and I have to admit I had to look up what it meant. If this is a new term to you, you’re not alone. However, it’s something that’s all around us, we just don’t know it by this specific name. Xenoestrogens are the product of man-made chemicals and natural compounds in the environment around us. As evident in the name, many of these chemicals have estrogen-like properties that affect your endocrine system. BPA and Phthalates are the most common of these chemicals. Exposure to these elements can hinder men of all ages, and can even affect the onset of puberty in males. Examples of xenoestrogens include herbicides, plastics, and insecticides.
With the abundance of processed foods in our diet, a lot of what we ingest are refined carbohydrates. The cereal you eat in the morning, the bread or bun on your sandwich, and the crust of your pizza are all examples of this. These carbs lead to an increase in your insulin levels, which disturbs the hormone pathways in your body and can hinder the production of testosterone.
Hormones Used in Food Production
Have you ever seen a farm that raises chicken or cattle for meat production? Farm animals used for food production are absolutely massive these days, compared to decades ago, and that is attributed to the hormones the farmers use to boost their growth. More muscle and meat to sell equals more money for the farmers. Unfortunately, while these hormones boost the size of the livestock, they are harmful to our testosterone levels when we consume this meat.
Who here doesn’t have stress in their life? Whether it be your career, paying bills, family obligations, needing to be in too many places at once, stress can cause havoc on your body. Stress spikes your cortisol levels, which in turn affects your hormone pathways and inhibits the production of testosterone. On top of that, even if you’re taking a testosterone supplement like Testogen, stress can even block it from being effective!
It pains me to add this to the list, but it’s true. Regardless if you’re consuming it in moderation, beer has been shown to lead to a nearly 7% drop in testosterone levels. It’s not necessarily the alcohol itself, rather its the hops used to make it, which can have estrogen-like effects.
